The Chairman of Vietnam Garment and Textile Association (VITAS), Mr Le Quoc An said that the textile and garment sector is putting full efforts to increase exports by 6 percent in the second half of 2009.

He said, “The sector witnessed a depressing time in the first quarter of 2009, but a recovery was noticeable in the second quarter, but still the sector suffered a negative growth rate of 4.7 percent in the first half of 2009”.

He added by saying that, “Exports to the biggest overseas market of Vietnam; the US, fell by 5 percent, while shipments from the textile and garment sector to its second biggest market; EU suffered by 4 percent”.

He continued by saying that, to boost export to new markets like Taiwan, Korea and Singapore, the sector has solicited the help of the Ministry of Trade and Industry to help it by promoting products from the sector.

He concluded by saying that as an immediate measure, the government was promoting schemes which would help set up factories for producing fibres, yarns and fabrics to reduce the import dependency on these raw materials.
