Clothing Union on war path over wage hikes

Jul '09
Clothing industry workers have threatened to go on a nationwide strike if their demand for a R70 increase in weekly wages is not met by the garment manufacturing companies. Most of these take home an average of R399 per week.

The General Secretary of SA Clothing and Textile Workers' Union (Sactwu), Andre Kreil said that companies had offered hikes beginning from R19.95 per week to the lowest paid worker to R32.32 per week to the highest paid worker.

He said in the last six years the workers had made compromises in their salary hikes in a bid to stabilise the industry, but now with the Govt doling out millions of Rands for the industry, they also should be suitably compensated.

He added by saying that the Union had made a study of the financial health of the textile and apparel companies and they had come to the conclusion that it was perfectly within the means of these companies to pay a hike of R70 per week.
