American Apparel & Footwear Association (AAFA) President and CEO Kevin M. Burke released the following statement on the heels of news that Burma's (also known as Myanmar) democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi will continue to be held in isolation following her apparent conviction for allegedly violating the terms of her house arrest because of an uninvited intrusion into her home.

“The decision by Burma's dictatorial regime to unjustly hold Aung San Suu Kyi captive continues to justify the AAFA-supported ban of imports from Burma recently renewed by both houses of the U.S. Congress and signed by President Obama. I appreciate the tough stance the U.S. Government has taken in refusing to do business with any country or region that promotes such tyranny.

“Now is the time for our trading partners in Europe, Canada, and Asia to move quickly and implement similar economic sanctions and further political sanctions against Burma to signal to the military junta that oppression and brutality are not welcome in the global marketplace.”

The American Apparel & Footwear Association (AAFA) is the national trade association representing apparel, footwear and other sewn products companies, and their suppliers, which compete in the global market. AAFA's mission is to promote and enhance its members' competitiveness, productivity and profitability in the global market by minimizing regulatory, commercial, political, and trade restraints.
