The government in a bid to reduce dependency on gas generated electricity; is planning to provide duty free diesel to garment manufacturers. This was revealed by the Energy Advisor to the Prime Minister, Mr Chowdhury.
Mr Chowdhury mentioned this at meeting he had, with a delegation from the Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BKMEA) and asked them to assess the consumption pattern of diesel in the whole sector.
He also advised them to use furnace oil instead of diesel as the government had withdrawn duty on furnace oil in the recently declared budget and said that the government would set up furnace oil-based rental power plant.
The apparel manufacturing sector in Bangladesh has been disrupted to a large extent, due to the shortages of gas and electricity in the country which had resulted in a decline in production by at least 30 percent.
