Sri Lankan apparel industry is a stable industry and produces high quality garments that can be marketed anywhere across the globe. It has already received the export orders for next six months, said Mr Anura Priyadarshan Yapa, Information and Media Minister and Cabinet Spokesman while addressing a weekly Cabinet Press briefing.

He added that the government in cooperation with banks will make arrangements to provide financial assistance to small and medium scale garment manufacturers. Also a garment factory, with employment opportunities for around 1000 youths, will be established in Eastern Province.

Further he said that GSP Plus would not benefit Sri Lanka for more than one or two years. The country was entitled for this program for the past few years, when it was drastically affected by the 2004 Tsunami.

The Minister said that the Sri Lankan Government has not received any information related to the extension of GSP Plus program. The country has already signed all international agreements related to the protection of labour rights, he added.
