700 garment workers dismissed in MEPZ, Cebu

Recently the Labour Director of Central Visayas, Elisa Cayanong confirmed that some workers had been retrenched from garment units in the Mactan Export Processing Zone (MEPZ) in Cebu, which is a hub in garment processing.
These units which include, Metrowear, Mactan Apparel, Fedder Apparel and Global inall have retrenched around 700 workers. Cayanong said that these workers had been paid their severance benefits.
But most of the workers complained by saying that they had been dismissed without any reason and have asked the Department of labour to file a complaint with the National Labor Relations Commission.
