Demanding for higher pay, thousands of clothing workers in South Africa staged a strike on Tuesday, bringing the industry to a standstill. The strike has around 90 percent of support, said the South African Clothing & Textile Workers' Union (SACTWU).
About 55,000 workers from hundreds of factories across the country have walked off their jobs. SACTWU is demanding a 7.9 percent pay hike for clothing workers and have rejected 5 percent pay increase offered by the employers.
Citing the pay increase demand reasonable and affordable, SACTWU said that clothing workers in the country are the lowest paid workers amongst the country's entire manufacturing sector.
The Congress of South African Trade Unions, a political ally of the governing African National Congress is also supporting the strike. As the SACTWU members are paid very low, its right to ask for more and they can't be expected to take a cut below inflation rate, said a SACTWU spokesman.
