Hong Kong athletes are getting ready for the 11th National Games with the start of the flag presentation–cum-torch relay ceremony held at Kowloon Park Sports Centre in Hong Kong on 12 September 2009.

The event was jointly officiated by the Hong Kong SAR Chief Executive, Mr. Donald Tsang, Secretary for Home Affairs, Mr. Tsang Tak-sing, and the Chairman of the Organizing Committee of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Delegation to the 11th National Games of the People's Republic of China (Organizing Committee), Mr. Timothy Fok. The 11th National Games will be staged in Shandong this coming October and is being billed as the largest ever in terms of scale and in the number of participating athletes. In keeping with the spirit of the games The Hong Kong SAR will send its largest ever delegation, comprising of 340 members, including 230 athletes and 110 supporting and medical personnel participating in the 25 sports events of the 11th National Games. Chief Executive Donald Tsang was on hand to present the Hong Kong SAR flag to the Hong Kong Delegation. All athletes of the Hong Kong Delegation received the flag and torch on their specially designed Xtep branded apparel to gear up for the upcoming national event.

Mr. Tsang Tak-sing, Secretary for Home Affairs, said the 11th National Games is of great significance as this year is the 60th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China as well as the 50th Anniversary of the Games. He believed the Hong Kong athletes will make use of the opportunity to exchange skills with Mainland elite athletes and prepare themselves for the East Asian Games to be held at the end of the year.
