A member of the Sri Lankan parliament revealed the shocking news that; the number of garment manufacturing enterprises in the island country had reduced to just 200 in the last few years.
He blamed the government policies for the same and said that the number of apparel manufacturers had fallen from 789 to just 200 now.
Export Development and International Trade Minister Prof. G. L. Peiris admitted that some garment factories had indeed been closed down in recent years.
However, he said, the government has taken action to commence a textile processing zone in a 70 acre land in Tulhiriya and another at a 223 acre land at Horana.
The current government had promised to set up three textile processing zones to enhance value addition of the apparel sector and increase job opportunities in the country.
