According to provisional figures released by the Ministry of Commerce, clothing exports continued on a downward spiral and fell by 19.17 percent year-on-year, in the month of August 2009.

The fall in garment exports in the month of August to US $263.39 million, follows a decline by 18.84 percent and 33.06 percent in the months of July and June respectively.

Overall exports from the sector touched $1.59 billion in the first eight months of 2008, which is lower by 22.56 percent, when corresponded with the same period of the previous year.

The main reason for the decline is the slowdown in garment orders from its biggest market; US. Exports were down by around 27.87 percent in August and in the period January-August, it fell by 29.9 percent.

In the period under consideration, shipments of clothing to the countries of the European Union shrank by a more modest 7.20 percent margin. However, these markets witnessed a growth of 8.87 percent in August.

This poor performance comes in stark contrast to the sterling performance by Vietnamese garment exporters, who reported a one percent growth in shipments in the first nine months of the current year.
