Knitwear Expo-09 attracts scores of foreign buyers
November 06, 2009 (Bangladesh)

With an objective to promote readymade garment industry products to the buyers around the world a knitwear expo, ‘Bangladesh Knitwear Exhibition-2009’ was organized by the Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturer and Exporters Association (BKMEA).

Prime Minister of the country Ms. Sheikh Hasina inaugurated this three-day, 5th annual exposition of knit-wears on November 1.

This event will pave way for showcasing stylish and standard Bangladesh knitwear in a big way, and the hordes of local manufacturers and foreign buyers at the exhibition would create a feasible and strong business environment, offering a fillip to country’s economy, hopped the PM while speaking at the inaugural ceremony.

She asked apparel factory owners of the country to pay suitable wages to the workers in order to raise their living standards, and also advised them to be alert to curb any unpleasant event in respect of the workers of this sector.

Revitalizing local apparel industry from the adverse impacts of global meltdown is one of the objectives behind organizing this exhibition, said Mr. Fazlul Hoque, BKMEA President. The industry saw plunge in this year’s exports compared to that of last year, due to recession, he added.

Around 153 buyers and representatives from countries such as Botswana, China, India, Japan, Pakistan, Russia, South Africa, the Netherlands, Thailand, Turkey and US attended the exhibition that ended on November 4.

Participation of 52 Japanese buyers was the best part of this year’s event. The country has become a potential apparel destination for Japan. Many other buyers from African countries also marked their presence in the fair as these countries have also started placing orders for Bangladeshi apparel items.

Numbers of seminars on apparel industry related issues will also be held by the association, said Mr. Hoque on the sidelines of the exhibition.
