'The Royal Pashmina', an exhibition held at Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts in New Delhi opened on December 21, was inaugurated by the Minister for Industries and Commerce, Mr. Surjit Singh Slathia.

Indira Gandhi National Centre for Arts (IGMCA) organized the exhibition in collaboration with J&K State Handloom Development Corporation. The Minister in his inaugural speech appreciated the hard work, done by the J&K State Handloom Development Corporation and local artisans of the State, to make the exhibition successful.

Jammu & Kashmir is well recognized for its cottage and agro based industries. Moreover, the handicrafts of the state and particularly the shawls created here are famous across the world for its softness, purity and intricacy; hence they always witness great demand from domestic as well as international consumers, said the Minister.

He further added that the designs of shawls would be modernized by utilizing all available resources and the J&K State Handloom Development Corporation has sought experts' services to conduct researches on shawl designs which has provided rich data base for reproduction of the master pieces.

Further he said that a project to recreate the masterpieces of olden times has been undertaken by the Corporation, under which, around 600 Pashmina shawl designs produced in various periods have been documented and taken up for recreating the same.
