Tirupur being a major knitwear cluster occupies a prominent position in knitwear export and domestic apparel market. The major produce is cotton based that limits the export potential. To remain competitive and achieve higher market share in the globalised economy benchmarking newer and greener technologies is the need of the hour.

In this context, Shri. Rakesh Vaid, Chairman-AEPC has taken a timely decision to establish a Knitwear Technology Mission (KTM) with Headquarters at Tirupur under the Chairmanship of PadmaShri. A. Sakthivel, President-FIEO & TEA. The unique and first of its kind, KTM project was initiated last year by Apparel Export Promotion Council (AEPC) with the emphasis on developing new genre fabrics from man-made fibres and blends, active/functional apparel and also to promote technical textiles viz., medical textiles, home textiles and smart/intelligent textiles.

KTM will focus on engaging newer and greener technology in manufacture, increasing the designing capability of knitwear sector aimed at higher value addition and also to bring round the year business. With the continuing efforts of Shri. A. Sakthivel, Chairman-KTM, a building for housing KTM has been constructed. Shri. Rakesh Vaid, Chairman-AEPC has declared open the AEPC - KTM Building. The constructed area of KTM building is 45,000 sq.ft consisting of five floors including basement.

KTM incorporates a Knitting Division with latest warp, weft and seamless knitting machines, R&D Division to engineer value-added innovative apparels, a full fledged state of art Textile Testing Laboratory, Design Studio with advanced software tools for garment designing, Resource Centre with collection of latest fabrics & garments supported by a database of textile value chain, Audio-Visual centre to create, communicate & disseminate designs/fashion illustration and a well equipped Library. The building is also housing the Centre of Excellence (CoE) in the name of Institute of Apparel Management (IAM) for Human Resource Development by offering professional programs with promising career in apparel industry.

To promote production of value added textile products, AEPC signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Pailung Machinery Mill Ltd, Taiwan for providing latest machines and technology support.

KTM would provide various support services to knitwear sector including research, training, design development, testing & certification, knowledge service and investor facilitation services on non-profit basis. Also, various training programs and specialized courses will be offered to student community to become industry ready professionals.
