The Nigerian custom authorities have seized a large consignment of textiles, apparels and used clothing at the check post in Jigawa state. This seizure was part of an exercise to clamp down on contraband textiles and clothing being brought illegally into the country.
The seizures, which include vegetable oil in jerry cans, textile materials in bales, guinea brocade materials and bales of second hand clothing, according to the customs officers were made over the weekend by the Area command's patrol officers.
The Nigerian textile industry among many challenges was facing competition from smuggled textiles and used clothing brought illegally in to the country and the Industry Minister had recently announced intention to clamp down on these illegal activities.
