IGNOU (Indira Gandhi National Open University) intends to increase the number of 'community' colleges across the country in next two years. It plans to elevate this number to 500 from the current 160, informed it's Vice-Chancellor Prof V N Rajasekharan Pillai.
He was speaking after the launch of a skill development program by IGNOU through community colleges at Sardar Vallabhbhai Institute of Textile Management in Coimbatore. This program launching was as one of the measures to bridge the gap in skill levels prevailing in the apparel and garment industry.
Garment industry needs skill development in apparel designing and manufacturing to acquire competitive stand on international platform, as the number of skilled labourers in a labour-intensive industry like apparels is below five percent, stated Prof Pillai.
Concept of Community Colleges is an alternative education system, wherein development of skills is provided, leading to gainful employment, he added.
