ASEAN clothing enterprises wary of Chinese dragon

The implementation of China – ASEAN "tariff reduction plan" has resulted in a number of Chinese companies to be either too impatient to access the market, or hold resources and carefully watch.

However, many sectors in the ten ASEAN countries do not seem very enthusiastic about the policy, and voices of concern are breaking out, especially from the textile and apparel industry, as China is the biggest global exporter from the sector and has also developed strong competitive advantages.

Since the last few years, Chinese products from the textile and clothing sector have already marked a presence in the markets of the ASEAN, but this new policy which entails duty-free imports, is making enterprises from these ASEAN countries jittery, on expectations of a flooding of Chinese goods.

Experts are of the opinion that Chinese textile and apparel industries, when entering the ASEAN market, must try to avoid the phenomenon of repeated antidumping prosecutions and special measures seen in traditional markets of Europe and the United States, which could hamper the rate of progress.
