International textile machinery suppliers noted that Bangladesh has better prospects at its forefront in the international apparel business.
The seventh annual Dhaka International Textile and Garments Machinery Exhibition 2010, organized by the Chan Chao International Company Ltd, a Taiwan based event management company, is to go on for four days at the Bangabandhu International Conference Centre. 750 stalls have been set up to facilitate 570 companies from 30 countries to display their machineries.
Denise Lee, Vice-President of Flying Tiger, a Taiwan-based knit machinery supplying company, and also a participant at the event, while indicating the sharp fall in demand for high end garment products in the midst of global economic crisis, stated that Bangladesh has the caliber to provide garment items at affordable prices due to beneficial factors like cheap availability of labour, coupled with the ability to create basic items.
Like Lee, many other participants too pointed towards the fact that in countries like China, Turkey, India and Pakistan wages are rising with amazing regularity, which has forced them to churn out high-end products.
Speakers at the event, mainly the representatives of the participating firms said that, next to China and Turkey, since Bangladesh is the third largest supplier of garment products, it has a chance to seize the second position in near future, if its abilities are rightly utilized.
But for this the government is required to set up an investment- friendly environment and develop infrastructure for easy functioning of businesses, they added.
