Earnings from the top export revenue generating sector; clothing has registered a notable decline in the first six months of the current fiscal year (2009-10). Among them shipments of both, knitwear and woven garments posted significant losses.
Exports of knitted clothing, which is the top category revenue generator, fell from US $3.24 billion in the corresponding period of the previous fiscal to $3.00 billion in the fiscal period under consideration, down by 7.18 percent.
Similarly, shipments of woven garments too declined from $ 2.80 billion in the first six months of fiscal 2008-09 to $2.58 billion in the corresponding period of the current fiscal to post a negative growth of 7.95 percent.
In the same period, Bangladesh earned an overall export income of $7.27 billion which is $484.19 million less than the earning recorded during the corresponding period of fiscal year 2008-09.
