The textile and clothing sector in Vietnam has affirmed its commitment to export US $10.5 billion worth of goods targeted by the sector in 2010. This was brought forth at a meeting of the Vietnam Textile and Garment Association.

The meeting was held to evaluate the textile and garment market situation this year and to work out solutions to meet the above-said target. Exports from the sector touched $9.06 billion in 2009, down just 0.6 percent year-on-year.

When compared with other competitor countries like China and India, this marginal reduction in exports is much better than those achieved by those two countries, was the unanimous opinion of those present at the meeting.

The optimism of achieving the targeted figures stems from the fact that a recovery in the key markets to which the industry exports is noticeable leading to a improvement in consumption demand and in turn order positions of exporting firms.

There are over 2,000 textile and garment enterprises in Vietnam, creating jobs for over two million workers and was the highest export revenue generator in 2009 and also has been able to retain its competitive edge despite the crisis in 2009.
