The ceremonial gown and hood of a convocation ceremony will be replaced by khadi kurta-pyjama and khumri, a traditional farmer's pagri (headgear) at Guru Ghasidas Central University, Chattisgarh.
According to Vice Chancellor of the university, Prof Laxman Chaturvedi, “The ceremonial gown and hood is the dress code of the colonial era. Therefore, a dress code that will reflect our Indian culture during the ceremony was decided upon.”
This decision comes within days of the Union Minister for Environment and Forest, Jairam Ramesh, removing the convocation dress, which he was made to wear at the Indian Institute of Forest Management, Bhopal, calling it a 'barbaric colonial legacy'.
