"Strangulation or suffocation hazard" has become the most frequently mentioned words in recall causes from Europe and the United States. Among 139 recall cases related to Chinese apparels made by EU's RAPEX in the first quarter of 2010, 129 recalls were cited as suffocation hazards from draw strings.

In the first quarter of 2010, the US CPSC made 15 recalls on China's textile and apparel products, 100 percent of recall causes was suffocation hazard.

This phenomenon of recalls related to suffocation or strangulation hazards is not new. In 2009, among 253 recalls by EU's RAPEX on textile and garment products, 97 percent was due to asphyxia causes.

While among 53 recalls by the US CPSC on textile and apparel products, 46 recalls were due to suffocation hazard, of which, 15 cases among 16 recalls on textile products were due to asphyxia causes.

According to the latest data, the phenomenon of strangulation or suffocation hazard in recalls has not improved. Manufacturing enterprises in China should attach great importance to apparel safety laws and regulations in Europe and the United States.

They should actively seek responding measures, and assess product design and safety performance. Textiles and clothing recall caused by "strangulation or suffocation hazard" should attract urgent and great attention from apparel designers and clothing manufacturers.
