Clothing exports have picked up pace in the first quarter of 2010 and have recorded growth, pushing back unpleasant memories of hard times the industry faced, beginning from the second half of 2008 and whole of 2009.
Apparel exports rose by 7.24 percent in the first three months of 2010, when compared with the same period of 2009, according to Ministry of Commerce statistics, but remained below the pre-crisis levels of the first quarter in 2008.
Garment shipments touched US $671 million, up from $626 million for the same quarter last year. Exports to the US went up 4.13 percent. Shipments to the EU markets saw a growth of 7.32 percent and other overseas markets were up 20.12 percent.
Experts are however of the opinion that, these growth figures are from the very low base level figures registered in the first quarter of 2009. Garment exports had fallen to $626 million in the first quarter 2009, from $784 million for the same period in 2008
Overall; the 2009 calendar year witnessed Cambodia's apparel exports plunge by 15.46 percent compared to 2008.
