Bangladeshi RMG workers are still not offered hike in their minimum monthly wages, despite their protests staged last month. Hence, recently, the union leaders of the RMG sector have warned the government of staging a countrywide shutdown in the RMG-related industrial hubs from the end of July.
The garment workers of Bangladesh seek minimum monthly wage of Tk 5000. They will stage massive protests to get their 11-point-demand fulfilled by stopping work in the garment sector, which brings in highest foreign currency into the country and accounts for 80 percent in the country's overall exports.
Last month, thousands of RMG workers staged demonstrations in various parts of greater Dhaka for wage hike wherein, production of around 100 factories was suspended and dozens of clothing units were ransacked, jeopardising millions of taka.
After this five-day unrest, the labour Minister had announced that, the minimum monthly wage will be increased before the month of Ramadan. A committee has also been formed in this regard. Worker's current cost of living will be considered while improving their minimum monthly salary.
