The 17th GGMA National Garment Fair 2010 is scheduled to be held in Ahmedabad from July 10-12. This year, the fair is anticipated to attract a large number of business visitors and will surpass all previous records and is expected to be a platform to think afresh and work out strategies to meet the new economic order.

There will be around 150 exhibitors displaying over 500 brands in a sprawling area of more than 200,000 square feet. The biggest achievement of the fair organizers; The Gujarat Garment Manufacturers Association (GGMA) has been that, all stalls were booked within a week of opening the bookings.

There is an air of optimism of the prospects of all round growth of the garment industry in Gujarat and with the economy showing signs of coming out of the lean patch caused by the slowdown due to global economic recession, manufacturers, exporters and retailers are fired with hope of a surefire revival in the very near future.

In order to understand the vision and expectations from the fair, fibre2fashion spoke exclusively with Mr Vijay Purohit, President of GGMA.

We began by asking him to reveal the vision behind hosting the fair, to which he said, “We want to give a platform to apparel clothing companies and brands in Gujarat so that they can become famous all over India by means of this fair. This fair is particularly for our members to expand their business.

On his expectations from the fair, Mr Purohit said, “The idea is to attract maximum number of visitors to the fair from across India so that the clothing manufacturing sector in the state gets the maximum mileage. Last year, the fair attracted around 14,000 visitors, but this year we expect the figure to jump to 20,000”.

When quizzed about the future of garment industry in Gujarat, he replied by saying “The future of the clothing industry is very bright as the government is giving a thrust to the sector in the state. We have abundant raw materials in the state, which gives an edge and our target is to make Gujarat the number -1 apparel manufacturing destination in the country”.

We concluded the interview by asking him about positive aspects of the industry in Gujarat, to which he informed, “The apparel producers in Gujarat, at one time were reliant only on quantity, but now they are veering towards production of quality and high-value goods. On the design front, Gujarat used to launch new designs after they were launched in other markets, but now news designs and collections are launched at the same time or even earlier”.
