Over 2,000 workers of Berry Apparel Co Ltd's factory at Dangkor district, while agitating for an instantaneous rise in their wages, staged a strike at the factory, early this week.
It was during the previous week that the Labour Advisory Committee sanctioned a hike of US $11 in the minimum wages paid to these garment workers, which is to take effect from October. But, the strikers contended that, the period is too long for them to wait and thus, demanded that the raise should be made effective from August itself.
Chhun Sok Hy, Factory President of the Free Trade Union of Workers of the Kingdom of Cambodia, said that, the house owners leasing accommodation to workers, while responding to the formal announcement of wage hike have already inflated the property rents and are in no mood to loiter till the month of October.
In the meantime, Bath Bel, Chief of the factory administration said that, the factory would adhere to the schedule laid down by the government.
