The Sri Lankan trade unions are a worried lot these days. In a bid to draw attention to poor labour and workers rights, the local trade unions had provided substantial material to American trade unions, which in turn petitioned the US administration to withdraw the GSP+ to Sri Lanka, citing poor labour rights.
Now, the Sri Lankan trade unions are claiming that, their intention was to only draw attention and to ensure that labour laws are implemented and are not in favour of GSP+ being withdrawn. Earlier, the European Union had withdrawn the GSP+ facility, quoting human rights violations.
Under the GSP+ facility, Sri Lanka receives preferential treatment in its exports, by way of duty-free tariffs. If the US goes ahead and withdraws the GSP+ facility, the biggest impact will fall on the highest export revenue generator as well as the biggest employment generator in the country.
