The American Apparel & Footwear Association (AAFA) applauded the U.S. Senate for voting to renew the total ban on imports from Burma under the Burmese Freedom and Democracy Act of 2003. The affirmative vote followed an AAFA key vote letter sent to every member of the Senate urging for swift passage of the measure.

“I applaud the Senate for moving quickly to renew the total ban of imports from Burma because it sends the right message that the United States is not interested in doing business with oppressive regimes,” said AAFA President and CEO Kevin M. Burke. “I would like to thank Senate sponsors Senators Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) and Mitch McConnell (R-KY) and House sponsors Representatives Joseph Crowley (D-NY) and Peter King (R-NY) for their continued leadership in renewing this ban to prevent it from lapsing.”

“I now call on President Barack Obama to sign the renewal before the ban expires on July 26, 2010,” said Burke. “The U.S. apparel and footwear industry looks forward to continuing our work with President Obama, Congress, and our global trade partners to ensure that freedom truly comes to the Burmese people.”
