From Monday, July 26 the meeting was postponed to Tuesday, July 27 and the decision is finally out. A minimum monthly wage for readymade apparel workers has been fixed at Tk 3,000.

Wage board members finally took a stance for fixing the minimum monthly wage and they are currently, visiting the ministry to submit the draft proposal. The decision was taken after a tripartite meeting took place at the wage board's office, later on Tuesday.

But yet, the new wage structure for the readymade apparel workers will only be officially declared on July 29. More over, labour minister has promised that worker's interests will be taken care of in the wage structure.

RMG sector contributes around 80 percent to the nation's US $18 billion export earnings, although the workers often come out on the street demanding for increased pay and other allowances. The current minimum wage is Tk 1,662.50 per month.

In fact even the Prime Minister, Sheikh Hasina had recently informed the parliament that, garment worker's current wage was insufficient and inhumane.
