RMG workers in Ashulia, Narayanganj restart production

Several apparel firms in Ashulia and Narayanganj recommenced production, as workers returned to their workplace, amidst tight security, post days of violent protest over discarding the new wage-structure.

As thousands of workers approached the just-opened RMG units, several policemen with bullet-proof vests and helmets were posted at major industrial areas to maintain law and order situation.

Production recommenced in the factories, following a three party meeting between the government, RMG factory owners and union leaders, who accepted the new wage structure, which hikes the minimum monthly wage of the country's 3 million RMG labourers by 80 percent.

Abdus Salam Murshedy, President of Bangladesh Garments Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), averred that, as workers entered the factories smiles could be seen on their faces. More over, owners too have been instructed to put in to affect the new wage structure from the day it is intended to be.

But around all positivism there are still those who are pessimistic, as they believe that the meeting between government, RMG owners and workers was a conspiracy against the labourers. More over, this bunch of people also allege that those who have agreed to accept the government announced pay-structure were not genuine representatives of the workers and that, they traded worker's rights to the owners.
