The Cambodian garment sector lost more jobs then it could create in the first six months of 2010. 60 new factories were put in to operations in the period; against which 43 pulled own their shutters.
The 60 new factories which opened in the period January to June 2010 generated jobs for 15,000 workers. However, the 43 garment enterprises which closed down shed around 15,700 jobs.
Oum Meam of the labour ministry said that, when a new factory is set up, it cannot absorb a full complement of workers immediately and will take time for the factories to reach their employment potential.
He however was very optimistic about the future, as exports of garments have picked up in the last few months and expects foreign investments to surge due to the favourable policies of the government.
