Paris Accessories, an apparel manufacturer from New York City, will shut down its Allentown plant in November this year, which would render 66 people jobless, as per the papers filed with the state administration.
The President of the company – Donald Oberfield, had written a letter to the State Department of Labor and Industry stating its decision to shut down the 270,000 sq. ft. unit located at 2645 Mitchell Avenue on 12th November, 2010.
But the company's letter written on 27th July clearly stated that they could shift to other sites and the union workers could exercise these rights.
The apparel industry of the area has been undergoing a declining trend since quite sometime due to the difficulty faced by the local producers in competing with the low wages elsewhere in the world.
Those companies which have continued to exist, have their own niche, high value products and adjusted rapidly to the changes taking place in the world of fashion. All these have enabled them to attract higher prices for their output.
