Employee numbers fall rapidly in garment sector

The garment industry has recorded a sharp fall in the last six years. The total labour force has gone down by over 100,000 and the total number of factories to 518 in 2010 from 842 in 2004.

The garment sector had 352,171 employees in 2004, which came down to 233,203 in 2010. There were 527 apparel factories operating in Sri Lanka in 2009 with 277,901 employees compared to 607 factories in 2008 with 277,780 employees.

But the revenue generated from exports of this industry had increased to US $3,053 million in 2009 from $2,654 million in 2004.The industry also recorded $794mn worth revenue from garment exports up to March in 2010.

Dinesh Gunawardane, the Chief Government Whip, stated that top investors from the country purchased some small factories. The Govt. has planned to motivate the investors to buy factories which had already been shut down and generate fresh investments. The Govt. is also trying to locate some new investors for this purpose.
