Abdus Salam Murshedy, President, Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association, recently called upon the Government to ease the conditions at the Chittagong Port, in the interest of the garment industry.

Murshedy said that, BGMEA is very much distressed with the worsening of the conditions at the port.

He further stated that, during May to August period this year, the garment exporters were required to spend extra Tk 9.05 billion, towards forwarding cargo by air, for timely delivering the orders on scheduled dates.

Meanwhile, the worker representatives of the Dock Bandar Sramik Karmachari Federation have also sounded a caution to launch fresh movement to push their demands like recruitment of staff.

Moreover, the trade union even averred that, with mishandling, the port has now transformed itself into an amateurish and costly port.

The trade body has also put forward a demand for constituting a committee to recognize and reimburse the exporters who had to suffer financial losses due to mismanagement at the port.
