The Dominican Government recently imposed a ban on sale of used garments in the markets alongside the Haiti border, in order to prevent the spread of Haiti's cholera in the Republic. Dealers from Haiti earn livelihood by selling their goods, including footwear in these border markets.
The Republic has strengthened security on the borders and more forces have been deployed there to check the spread of the disease through infection from Haitians who enter the territory through this border.
This restriction on the sale of used garments in border markets has been imposed as a part of the hygiene controls in order to prevent the disease from spreading in the Republic.
Though there are no confirmations to the spread of disease via garments, the trade has been banned on precautionary basis, as there is no way to exercise a check on the handling of these garments.
