Abdus Salam Murshedy, President of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), recently requested the BNP to keep the apparel sector free from the strike which it has called on November 30, in the country's larger interest.
Murshedy while speaking at a press conference held at the BGMEA Bhavan prior to inauguration of the Bangladesh Apparel and Textile Exposition (BATEXPO)-2010 said that, previously too the apparel sector was exempted from such strikes, and that the same is expected in the future also.
The three-day BATEXPO-2010 had started at the Bangabandhu International Conference Centre on November 25, with an aim to draw domestic as well as overseas apparel buyers.
He revealed that, regardless of the global economic slump, they procured spot-orders for $41.68 million worth of apparels through the expo last year, and expects considerable orders to flow in, this year too.
Murshedy said that, despite of the global economic meltdown, their apparel exports to India, Japan, South Africa, New Zealand and Australia during last year were on a high, which is indicative of the growing influence of emerging markets.
He further stated that, if Bangladesh manages to attain political stability, trade and commerce in the country are forced to grow.
