“Using Fildan fasteners meant the neckline on the swimsuit could be altered from an asymmetric to a double strap square neckline,” said Elena.

Elena describes her success in the competition as “my greatest achievement so far” and hopes to utilise her passion for lingerie and corset design in further involvement with well known companies in the UK or abroad.

Hannah Thomas, 20, from South Wales, was inspired by complex structures, both natural and man-made. Two of the outfits created featured the Butterfly Hook and Eye fastening to facilitate the attachment of suspenders to knickers.

Hannah describes the collaboration as “challenging, but a great experience and a fantastic opportunity. I think it's so exciting that the DMU Contour Fashion degree maintains such strong links with the industry.”

Company owners Gerhard and Mary Fildan considered the standard of work completed by the whole group to be so high that a further four students were awarded with Special Commendation certificates.

Company owner, Gerhard Fildan, said: “It was great to meet all the professionals and teachers at DMU and a pleasure to meet in person so many committed and active students who joined our competition and to see that the university and their Contour Fashion course are driving forwards.

“It was wonderful to see and experience the spirit and creativity of DMU's students in connection with our Butterfly hook&eye development.”
