Matola-based Moztex clothing factory, has recently revealed that since it started its operations in September 2009, it has so far exported around 1,20,000 readymade garment (RMG) products to South Africa.

The unit functions in the premises which were once occupied by the huge Texlom textile unit, which then was amongst the biggest employers in the southern Mozambican city of Matola. Presently, Moztex operates seven clothing production lines with 614 workers working in it, majority of them being women. Also, this section of the city has now been declared as a free industrial zone.

Further, the facility intends to reach a level where it can house a thousand machines and employ 1,800 workers which would then boost its total investment to $7.5 million, but then all these are subject to the firm's success in the market. Also, it is likely to start shipping its products to United States and Europe, from next year onwards.

The unit is expected to cut down the unemployment level in Mozambique as it is a labour-intensive industry and has the potential of employing additional workers.

Further, since the factory is located in a free zone so its production is meant for export purpose and not for sale in the local markets. This law cannot be altered and the factory is allowed to sell its products in domestic market only if it has any surplus after all the export orders are met with.
