J.J. Schoeman, a designer from South Africa, while addressing a seminar on "Value Added Garments Exports to South Africa" said that, South Africa could prove to be a good market for Indian garment producers.

The seminar held in New Delhi on April 21 was organized by the Apparel Export Promotion Council (AEPC), the apex body of apparel exporters of India.

The designer who believes that hand embroidery and designer children's wear could earn them good profits said that, South African markets could present Indian garment exporters with an excellent opportunity in the field of hand embroidery work.

This is because; they are at advantage as fabrics like chiffon and georgette are easily available in India at a much cheaper price than that in South Africa.

Further, while calling attention to South Africa's large designer children's wear market he said that, it is a big market which has potential to present the designer kid's wear manufacturers from India with massive opportunities to penetrate in South Africa.

Vimal Kirti, Secretary General of AEPC who shared similar views, said that, the South African market appears to be quite a promising market for garment exporters from India, and added that, with their cost competitiveness and potential of delivering quality goods, Indian garment makers could catch hold of a larger share of South Africa's high-end garment market.

Editor's note –
Considering that exports of Indian clothing grew at a measly rate in the 2010-11 fiscal, it is very important to locate and explore new potential global markets to keep pace with India's competitor countries in the sub-continent.
