Cambodia's clothing exports to US grow
May '11
A 26 percent hike has been registered in Cambodia's clothing exports to the US during the initial three months of the current year, over corresponding period last year. This is indicative of the easing of the situation in the post-2008 economic crisis period, Kong Puthear, Director of Statistics for the Ministry of Commerce said.

Mr. Puthear said that the recovery in US markets to some extent has resulted in a rise in orders for Cambodia.

According to the Ministry's statistics, the clothing exports grew from US$ 411 million to $521 million during the period under review, while 2010's total exports stood at US$ 1.84 billion.

Besides Bangladesh, Honduras and El Salvador, Cambodia was amongst the 10 cheapest clothing suppliers to the US.

All these four nations witnessed a rise in clothing exports at the start of the current year, while Bangladesh registered the fastest year-on-year rise during the initial two months.

As stated by the Free Trade Union President Chea Mony, the earnings of the factory owners from clothing exports have gone up, but these profits have not been shared with the workers.

He said that the garment workers are the real manufacturers and if their wages are not hiked, it certainly would affect their productivity and hence exports.

However, Cheat Khemara, a top official at the Garment Manufacturers Association of Cambodia, claimed that the earnings of the factories were not that high. Still, the factory workers have forewarned that low wages will not be sufficient to sustain the continuously rising cost of goods.

There are around 273 garment firms in Cambodia, with over 370,000 workers working therein.
