Apparel manufacturers in Sri Lanka are setting up hydro-power projects to offset their current power consumption. It is because international garment procurers are pressurizing their suppliers to follow zero carbon emissions, as a measure to fight climate change.
The power generated by these hydro-power plants is being sold by the garment manufacturers to the national grid.
Further, to minimize their emissions in audits, these manufacturers have also outsourced non-essential services like transportation, according to Dr. BMS Batagoda, Director General of Department of National Planning under Ministry of Finance and Planning, Government of Sri Lanka.
Sri Lanka's potential to offset 85,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide may not be sufficient and the country would have to purchase carbon credits from China in future, Dr. Batagoda said.
Out of the 2,000 Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) projects accredited by the UN, Sri Lanka has only six. Many Sri Lankan projects were rejected by the CDM as they could not provide details of emissions reduction.
