Despite being an early adopter and the world leader in B2C e-commerce until recently, the United States offers room for continued growth, according to a report titled ‘USA B2C E-Commerce Sales Forecasts: 2017 to 2021” by Dublin-based market research firm Research and Markets.
Online retail is growing at a rate at least three times faster than total retail sales in the country, the world's second largest online retail market. Over half of shoppers shop as much online as in-store for categories like apparel, books and electronics, a press release from the company said citing the report.
Market trends contributing to the sustained growth of online retail in the country include omni-channel shopping, i.e., combining online shopping and store visits with practices such as click and collect or research on mobile device while visiting stores, and shopping through smartphones or tablets.
Over half of online retail in the United States will be through mobile commerce by 2021. Amazon.com is the leading online merchant in the country and its current share of one third of total online retail sales is expected to grow, the report adds. (DS)
