Crown Uniform textile recycling program on course

Crown is making sure that retired new and gently used garments are not wasting away in landfills, but instead are making their way back into service in homeless shelters, soup kitchens, warm coat programs, disaster relief efforts, and free medical care programs.

Quality control experts are constantly on the lookout for items that have fallen below Crown’s strict quality standards, but can still be transferred into the Wear 2 program for repurposing. An ink stain on the hem of a lab coat might take that lab coat out of the medical apparel service, but would not make it unwelcome in disaster relief efforts.

Sometimes new garments are replaced or retired due to a change in fabric color or patterns but still have years of use left in them. These will also find their way into Crown’s Wear 2 program, being distributed into the many charitable channels that Crown has established throughout New England.

Lab coats and scrubs are playing a part in medical programs and disaster relief efforts through Doctors Without Borders. Medical scrubs and warm up jackets are also finding new purpose in homeless shelters, as pajamas for overnight clients.

Chef coats and kitchen aprons are making their way back into food service at soup kitchens and culinary schools. A few of those aprons have even managed to find their way into a local library’s summer event where children will bake bread for those in need.

Old linens are becoming bedding for area animal shelters. Heavy coats are keeping people in our community warm in the winter. Uniform shirts, slacks, and jeans provide extra clothing to those who need it. Some have become work uniforms again in programs like Community Work Service (CWS), which helps unemployed adults train and find work in the Greater Boston Area.
