Reiterating the Pakistani Government’s commitment to the issue of stuck sales tax refunds, special assistant to prime minister on revenue Haroon Akhtar Khan has told representatives of the All Pakistan Textile Mills Association (APTMA) that the government has cleared about Rs. 40 billion worth such refunds to the industry in the first four months of 2017.

Khan said the focus of the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has shifted from burdening the existing taxpayers to finding new taxpayers. FBR has registered 73 per cent revenue growth during the last four years and to chase those who do not file taxes, three zones had been created in Karachi, Lahore and Islamabad to broaden the tax base, media reports in Pakistan quoted Khan as saying.

In a recent meeting, both sides discussed in detail issues related to sales tax refunds on deferred, current and rolled back refund payment orders and the import of raw materials by the basic textile industry.

APTMA Punjab province chairman Ali Pervaiz urged FBR representatives to evaluate the performance of their field staff on gross revenue collection, else they would keep holding back refunds to achieve revenue target. (DS)
