Hohenstein Institute America will present several new fabric testing procedures and certifications relevant to manufacturers of outdoor and athletic apparel and gear. Hohenstein experts will be available to discuss these innovations at Booth #62026 at OR Summer Market, August 6-9 in Salt Lake City.

Hohenstein is a global leader in textile research, testing, and certification. The scientists at Hohenstein excel at translating research findings into valuable evaluation techniques and independent quality labels. These services help designers develop effective products that perform as expected and can be credibly marketed to discerning consumers such as the outdoor athlete.

“The outdoor consumer is one of the most demanding in the marketplace,” says Hohenstein’s Dr. Jan Beringer who will be attending the OR Show. “They are educated about product performance, have exceedingly high expectations of the products they buy, and value third party validation and the transparency it provides. Hohenstein offers services that help brands and retailers meet all these demands.”

New tests and certifications of particular interest to outdoor retailers and brands include: Stain resistance and soil release effectiveness: Textiles exposed to the elements experience unique conditions that can quickly deteriorate their appearance and performance. New procedures evaluate treated fabrics to determine the best finish formulas to protect against the specific stains and soils they will encounter in use.

-Performance after wash: Detergents can affect finishes and additives. Hohenstein can simulate washing over time and assess long term performance. Features like odor control, color retention, moisture management, and other benefits can be evaluated to determine optimal finish formulations, detergent selection, and home laundering conditions.

-Compression quality assurance: Compression clothing is embraced by the outdoor athlete for its injury prevention, recuperative, and endurance benefits. Hohenstein has developed a new certification that ensures compression garments meet the claimed pressure and gradient and other technical specifications.

-Antimicrobial product label: Antimicrobial finishes are popular in the outdoor market for their odor control properties. A new certification label, “Skin Flora Neutral”, reassures consumers that these antimicrobial finishes do not affect the naturally occurring beneficial microorganisms that live on the skin’s surface, even when used in apparel that is worn close to the body.
