The Gujarat Khadi Gramudyog Board (GKVIB) bowing to popular requests of majority of visitors to conduct Khadi Utsav on annual basis during its inaugural year 2011 successfully held the event, this year too.

Khadi Utsav 2012 held during the period December 31, 2011 to January 19, 2012, was jointly sponsored by Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC), Mumbai, Gujarat Energy Development Corporation Ltd., Vadodara and Gujarat Energy Development Agency (GEDA), Gandhinagar and was held at A.E.S Ground, Navrangpura, Ahmedabad.

Notable feature of this expo was that exhibitors notched up sales worth Rs 2 crores and 82 lakhs through marketing products such as khadi and village industries, as well as pottery works. The fact that organizers has to extend the closing date by three days to January 22, 2012, itself speaks of the tremendous response accorded to the event by the enthusiastic and buying populace of Ahmedabad city and its surroundings.

Khadi Utsav 2012 took off in traditional style on the tunes of Gandhiji's favourite bhajan ' Vaishnvjan to..' followed by an all religion prayer, in the presence dignitaries like Mr Ranjit Gilitwala, Minister of State, Government of Gujarat, Mr Devendrakumar Desai, Chairperson, KVIC, Mumbai who was also the chief guest and Mr Kiritbhai Solanki, MLA along with Mr Manubhai Mehta, representing Samanvay – a leading Khadi Gramudyog Sangh among others.

During the presentation, Mr Devendrakumar Desai was felicitated by Mr Kishore Rao D, Member Secretary, GKVIB on the former taking charge as Chairperson of KVIC.

Ongoing winter or rather prolonged season helped push Khadi products sales to never before seen levels even as Kolkata and Odisha Sarees, organic foods, herbal shampoos and beauty care products and decoration pieces besides artisanal potter works largely attracted buyers attention and ultimate purchases.

It is understood that sales of Khadi and Village Industries products are gaining popularity and acceptance not only in terms of quality and pricing but due to their unique appeals – hand made and naturally created.

Explaining the reasons for this, Mr Vadibhai Patel, Chairman, GKVIB says, “ Due credit goes to various Cluster Development Projects and Khadi and Village Industries Board apart from various designers associated with them. Matching its steps with the modern times, Khadi Institutions are today innovating their products and styles along with matching colours.

Offering an insight, Mr Kishore Rao D, Member Secretary, GKVIB says, “Most striking feature of this Khadi Utsav 2012 according to me is the attraction and presence in large numbers – youngsters and disposable income groups members who have turned to khadi in a big way.
