Union textiles minister Smriti Irani said that the government of India is currently working on a special package for the knitwear segment, which could be announced within a span of two months. In addition to this package, the government will also introduce a comprehensive national policy meant for the textile and apparel sector, added the minister.

The government is currently working on package that will help the knitwear sector cope with challenges it is facing currently, said Irani during a press briefing.

The national textile policy is likely to be taken up after the Textiles India event, which will begin on June 30 in Gandhinagar, Gujarat. This policy will help address problems pertaining to labour reforms, investments, skilled workforce and the future of the textile and apparel sector.

In the last one year, the textiles ministry has introduced packages for apparel, powerloom and made-ups sector. The apparel package that was launched in June last year resulted in the textile sector receiving investments over Rs 3,000 crore. (KD)
