Rural textile clusters to get boost from Italian experts
September 23, 2009 (India)

A seminar titled, ‘India and Italy: Design – A bridge between two countries’ was organised at the National Institute of Design in Ahmedabad on Tuesday. The Italian Trade Commissioner Augusto Di Giacinto was also present on the occasion.

On the sidelines of the seminar, Mr Giacinto revealed that expert teams from Italy will visit India in January to work out joint production and exchange of technology with companies involved in design and textiles.

To which, Mr Amarashish Phanse, Business Development Manager of the global textile, apparel and fashion website; fibre2fashion suggested that, these interactions should also be extended to textile and handicrafts clusters in small villages and towns.

Reacting to the statement, Mr Giacinto gave the assurance that he was also willing to facilitate interaction between these expert teams and the textiles and handicraft clusters operating in the unorganized sector, particularly in rural parts of India.

Earlier, Arturo Dell’Acqua Bellavitis, Senior Professor at the Politecnico di Milano, Milan, gave a detailed presentation on fabrics that are used by Italian design companies to construct exciting fashion clothing.

He said, “These fabrics include sustainable textiles, in which the entire production process is done using sustainable and eco-friendly means, flame retardant fabrics, fabrics used in sportswear and ‘emotional fabrics’ that emanate scents indigenous to a particular region.

Vijay Singh Katiyar and Gayatri Menon, professors at NID also gave presentations on “Textile Design for Socio-Cultural Sustainability and Economic Development of Traditional Hand Weaving Communities”, based on a project on clusters in Tamil Nadu.
