NIFT Kangra centre to offer degree and PhD programs
August 10, 2009 (India)

A Centre for Apparel and Textile Studies (CATS) at Kangra in Himachal Pradesh will be set up by the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT). This centre will offer number of Research Oriented Programs, PhD Programs as well Faculty Training Programs in Fashion Designing.

Union Minister of Textiles, Mr. Thiru Dayanidhi Maran revealed this, while inaugurating the NIFT Centre at Kangra, Himachal Pradesh.

CATS, Kangra will prove to be the first Fashion Institute in the country to offer Doctorate level studies in Fashion Designing, Fashion Communication, Accessory Design, Textile Designing and Fashion Technology, added the Minister.

About Rs. 60 crore have been allocated to establish this centre. Out of these, 20 crore will be utilized for setting up infrastructure and other related facilities for it on the 18 acre campus. Research studies in the centre will start in next academic year, said Mr. Maran.

He further informed that in the ongoing academic year about 1,950 students have been admitted in 13 NIFT centres throughout the country. In addition to this, various State governments have sent the proposals to the ministry to set up NIFT centres in the respective states, so the ministry is mulling over to set up such centres in the states including Jharkhand and Chattisgarh.

Mr. Maran informed that the National Institute of Fashion Technology Act 2006 that government brought into force on July 14, 2006 grants statutory status to the institute. This act allowed NIFT to offer a Degree in Fashion Education, which made NIFT, the first Fashion Institute in India to award the degree, added the Minister.

Now, the Institute intends to publish text books on fashion, again for the first time in the country, as the fashion field doesn’t have any standard text book till now, he informed.
