Recognizing that the machinery industry is the foundation of all industries, in 1981, the government declared the machinery-manufacturing sector as a strategic industry and focal point of the country's four-year economic plan.
TTaiwan Association of Machinery Industry or TAMI is a group of machinery industry manufacturers, supports this move to the fullest extent by setting up the organization to promote and build TAMI's machinery sector through concentrated efforts of the industry's individual enterprises. TAMI provides information and guidance to the government, and takes part in government economic programs for the collective benefits of the machinery business.

TAMI was founded in November, 1945, as Taiwan Association of Iron Industry. On July 28, 1946, the association was reorganized as Taiwan Provincial Association of Iron Industry. It again changed its name in May, 1947, to Taiwan Provincial Confederation of Machinery Industries. And finally, on April 28, 1948, the group established its present name as TAMI, Taiwan Association of Machinery Industry. Today TAMI has a membership list of more than 2,376 dedicated businesses, all uniting to serve the industry, local business as well as foreign communities.

TAMI is a democratic association in which the highest authority is the member representatives' assembly. This assembly consists of a general management association, a 27-member board of directors and a 9-member board of supervisors. A supervising convener board is chosen from these three groups. From the board of directors and the board of supervisors an executive board is elected. It is comprised of nine executive directors and three executive supervisors. The executive board handles routine affairs of the association.

Heading the association is the chairman, selected from the executive board of directors. The chairman is the chief administrator of TAMI and also its official representative at all public functions.

In order to promote the development of local machinery industry and its associated services, TAMI has established 24 special committees. One of the key tasks for TAMI is to represent the machinery manufactures from Taiwan at major international trade events.
