The Thailand Textile Institute (THTI) has joined hands with Rajamangala University of Technology (RMUT) to promote the local Muslim fashion industry in Thailand.

The Ministry of Industry, Thailand, has successfully started using local materials to produce Islamic clothes, the National News Bureau of Thailand reported.

Under the project to develop the Muslim fashion industry, a new Batik technique for dyeing clothes, using locally grown rubber and flowers, was invented in the fabric industry. The new technique helped reduce the cost of production and added an extra value for the end products.

THTI recently held a seminar which focused on expanding Thailand’s Muslim fashion industry throughout Southeast Asia. Local brands like Lawa and Lapara held fashion shows during the seminar.

Clothing items under the brands Lawa and Lapara have been distributed and sold in many countries including Singapore and Hong Kong. THTI aims to expand the Muslim clothing market to Europe and other Asean countries. Other Muslim clothing companies in Thailand are also upgrading the quality of their products to match with international standards.

Indonesia and Malaysia are both working towards promoting the Muslim fashion industry, targeting about 40% of the Asean Economic Community (AEC), with majorities only in Indonesia, Brunei, and Malaysia.

RMUT, in Thanyapuri district, possesses high recognition for its educational quality for over 30 years, and offers four levels of educational programs in various disciplines: diploma programs in vocational education, Bachelor’s Degree, Master’s Degree, and Doctor’s Degree programs.

THTI directs, promotes, and supports cooperation in the textile and modern fashion industry in order to enhance the competitiveness of textile and garment industry, both domestically and internationally. (GK)
